Aims:
  • To advance participants' basic knowledge of pelvic, women's and men's health.
  • Provide clinical guidance on integrating this knowledge into musculoskeletal clinical practice.
  • Provide practical tools that participants can use immediately on return to clinical environment.
NOTE: INTEGRATION teaches you the basics of pelvic health for both males and females as it relates to general musculoskeletal practice; it does not qualify you to become a pelvic floor, or women's and men's pelvic health professional.
Contents:
This course will cover common conditions and issues that you see in the clinic. The course covers:
  • • Types of pelvic floor dysfunctions
     
    • How to complete basic screening for pelvic health conditions
     

    • How to externally palpate the superficial pelvic floor muscles safely through clothing

    • Maternal birth injuries and ACC

    • Exercise during pregnancy and post-partum

    • DRAM management

    • Lumbar, pelvis, and groin injuries and their relationship to the pelvic floor

    • Return to function advice for post-prostatectomy patients

    • How to initiate training of the pelvic floor muscles

    • Adjusting standard physiotherapy care to account for pelvic health conditions

    • Respiratory conditions and the pelvic floor

    • Pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy

    • Sporting women and pelvic floor dysfunctions

Presenter:
Dr Melissa Davidson is the only registered Specialist Physiotherapist in Pelvic Health in New Zealand. Alongside her 32 years of clinical practice, Melissa has extensive post graduate qualifications including a PhD in Bioengineering, research Masters from Melbourne, a Diploma in Advanced Orthopaedic Manipulations from Canada, and Post Graduate Certificates in Physiotherapy in both Pelvic Floor and Acupuncture. She also has a Certificate in Health Science, is registered with the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand under Specialist Scope of Practice and is a long-term member of Physiotherapy New Zealand. She is the current President of the International Organisation of Physiotherapists in Pelvic and Women's Health.
Participants:
  • Females, males, and gender diverse registered health professionals are invited to take part in this course. No prior knowledge of pelvic floor, women's or men's health needed.
Additional details:
  • For the Integration Course, we can offer you a choice of attending in-person, or attending remotely live. This will need to be arranged in advance with us so we can get the 'tech' sorted - please contact Simon at [email protected] to let him know. The cost for attending remotely is the same as attending in-person.
  • Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea will be provided for inperson courses. If you have specific food requirements or allergies, we recommend you bring your own food with you.
  • External palpation of the superficial pelvic floor muscles through clothing will be taught as a group. Both male and female participants will be then split into small mixed groups to practice this technique on each other, with consent. If you are attending online, you will be able to do this technique on someone else at your location (with their consent!) or we will teach you how to assess it on yourself.
  • Bring yoga mat, water bottle and reusable cup for hot drinks (if you have one), pen and paper for note writing (no desks provided), laptop (if you prefer instead of note paper).
  • Wear flexible and comfortable clothing. No jeans, shirts, or tight thick pants please.
  • Bring a sense of humour and your brain; it's going to be a full on day :-)
  • A reading list will be sent out approximately 2 weeks before the course date.
